Belt sander belts wear faster when used at a single grit for extended periods than when used progressively — start with a coarser grit for rapid stock removal and step up to finer grits for finishing to get maximum life from each belt. Track the belt centrally on the sander rollers by adjusting the tracking knob while the sander is running — a belt that drifts to one side will fold and tear at the edge. Store spare belts flat or hung vertically to prevent the joint from creasing, which causes the belt to snap during use.
